I reblog what I can, but I've had to turn off my messages and asks due to the incredibly guilt-tripping messages I have been receiving. I'm often on Tumblr on my phone browser, so I don't see messages - logging into tumblr for the first time in 2 months on my desktop, and seeing over 100 messages, most with some variation of how I don't care because I'm ignoring them, is incredibly upsetting. I do what I can, and I give to my local community with my time and effort. I'm sorry that I can't do more.

That a major social media platform that's been around for two decades going down without proper archiving would represent a greater loss of human culture than any library that's ever burned is undeniably true, but it's also a very funny observation to make about Tumblr in particular.

tumblr has been brute-force archived by archive.org so many times, i really cannot believe there aren't a thousand complete copies of the whole site scattered around already.

library of alexandia can't say the same. imagine if anybody had tried to mob-rush the doors of that library to brute-force-copy its contents before it burned to the ground.

We shouldn't expect or depend on archive.org to be complete. I just checked my own URL, and it was only captured once each in the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. Then I looked at the snapshot from 2023 -- the first page looks fine, but the second page jumps straight back to 2016. What happened to all the years in between? I posted, and archive.org took occasional snapshots, but neither is reflected by how the pages are served up.
